چکیده

AVERAGING, when used to extract extremely small signals from relatively high levels of background noise, allows detection of evoked potentials at surprisingly large distances from the site of neuronal activity. In animals, volume-conducted potentials from brain-stem auditory structures can be recorded throughout the brain (Grinnell, 1963; Bullock et ah, 1968; Jewett, 1970) and even from the scalp (Jewett, 1970). In humans, auditory-evoked potentials can be detected at the vertex due to neural activity from subcortical structures (Jewett, Romano and Williston, 1970) as well as from primary cortical areas (Vaughan and Ritter, 1970). Under the conditions of skull and scalp boundaries and intracranial inhomogeneities, recordings from a single electrode position offer little indication as to the location of a wave's neural generator(s), whereas multiple recording sites may be more informative.

Independent Component Analysis in Wave Decomposition of Auditory Evoked Fields

In this paper we introduce a novel approach to the problem of decomposition of auditory evoked fields (AEF), measured by magnetoencephalography (MEG), into basic components. This approach is based on independent component analysis (ICA), that separates components according to the kurtosis of their amplitude distribution over time. The fixed-point algorithm used extracts one independent componen...

Direct current auditory evoked potentials during wakefulness, anesthesia, and emergence from anesthesia.

Direct current auditory evoked potentials (DC-AEPs) are a sensitive indicator of depth of anesthesia in animals. However, they have never been investigated in humans. To assess the potential usefulness of DC-AEPs as an indicator of anesthesia in humans, we performed an explorative study in which DC-AEPs were recorded during propofol and methohexital anesthesia in humans. DC-AEPs were recorded v...

Auditory processing skills in brainstem level of autistic children: A Review Study

Aims: Autism is a pervasive developmental disorder. Deficit in sensory functions is one of the characteristics of people with autism, and usually these people show abnormality in processing and correct interpretation of auditory information. Also people with Autism show problems in communicating with others. This review article deals with the accurate understanding of Auditory processing skills...

The use of kainic acid for studying the origins of scalp-recorded auditory brainstem responses in the guinea pig.

Kainic acid was injected into the medial nucleus of the trapezoid body (MNTB) of guinea pigs to evaluate its use in studying generator loci of the scalp-recorded auditory brain stem response (ABR). Sound-evoked near-field potentials from the MNTB and far-field ABRs were recorded before, during and up to 2 h after the injections. Two hours post-injection, small amounts of kainic acid (0.25 nmol ...

Functional connections between auditory cortex on Heschl's gyrus and on the lateral superior temporal gyrus in humans.

Functional connections between auditory fields on Heschl's gyrus (HG) and the acoustically responsive posterior lateral superior temporal gyrus (field PLST) were studied using electrical stimulation and recording methods in patients undergoing diagnosis and treatment of intractable epilepsy. Averaged auditory (click-train) evoked potentials were recorded from multicontact subdural recording arr...
